Congratulations to John Welsh who took home the title of the 2014 #CIVLSSBattle Champion! On April 11, during the second intermission of the Abbotsford Heat Game, John performed his easy-to-sing-along-to Newfie Song, which would be his winning performance! Through a poll on CiVL’s Facebook page, fans crowned John their favourite. As part of his prize package, John also performed at the Abbotsford Arts Council’s Arty Awards the very next evening.

The #CIVLSSBattle champion is keeping busy, as he will also perform at the Envision Financial Concert in the Park with the two other finalists, Franklyn Currie and Tristan Smith on July 19.

Congratulations to all of this year’s #CIVLSSBattle competitors: Todd Brown, Matt McAllister, Tristan Smith, My Goal is Telepathy (Andrew Muller), Corey Primus, Patrick Jolicouer, John Welsh, Alex Rake and Franklyn Currie.

Special thanks to the #CIVLSSBattle sponsors: Abbotsford Heat, Abbotsford Arts Council, Tractorgrease Multimedia and Jayme Anne Photography.

#CIVLSSBattle Congratulates 2 more Finalists!

April 3, 2014

Congratulations to John Welsh and Alex Rake for advancing to the playoff round of the #CIVLSSBattle!

Two more battles were held at Aftermath on Monday, March 17 and 31 and two talented singer-songwriters were named winners of their heats, making them finalists in the playoff battle to be held Monday, April 7.

The second battle welcomed Andrew Muller of My Goal is Telepathy, Corey Primus, Patrick Jolicouer and John Welsh, representing a wide range of styles. From Andrew’s one-man band featuring vocals layered over guitar and beats, to John’s original songs inspired by his travels to New Zealand, Mexico and Newfoundland, the crowd at the Aftermath was entertained and encouraged to sing along.

The third and final regular round battle featured a two-man race between Alex Rake and Franklyn Currie, resulting in the closest battle in CiVL’s Battle of the Bands (short) history. Only one point separated the two singer-songwriter’s final scores, but the two performers gave two very different shows. Alex switched between guitar and mandolin, while Franklyn drew on his 15-year experience of writing songs to convey his life growing up in Abbotsford.

Alex Rake took this heat, saying of his performance, “It was casual, but serious”.
