Congratulations to John Welsh who took home the title of the 2014 #CIVLSSBattle Champion! On April 11, during the second intermission of the Abbotsford Heat Game, John performed his easy-to-sing-along-to Newfie Song, which would be his winning performance! The second battle welcomed Andrew Muller of My Goal is Telepathy, Corey Primus, Patrick Jolicouer and John Welsh, representing a wide range of styles. From Andrew’s one-man band featuring vocals layered over guitar and beats, to John’s original songs inspired by his travels to New Zealand, Mexico and Newfoundland, the crowd at the Aftermath was entertained and encouraged to sing along.

The third and final regular round battle featured a two-man race between Alex Rake and Franklyn Currie, resulting in the closest battle in CiVL’s Battle of the Bands (short) history. Only one point separated the two singer-songwriter’s final scores, but the two performers gave two very different shows. Alex switched between guitar and mandolin, while Franklyn drew on his 15-year experience of writing songs to convey his life growing up in Abbotsford.

Alex Rake took this heat, saying of his performance, “It was casual, but serious”.

#CIVLBattle Week 3! Tie goes to…

Hrdwtr open with a stellar set!

The first set of curve-balls thrown at this year’s #CIVLBattle reared their awkward head in week 3 of round 1, which saw Aldergrove’s Hrdwtr, Abbotsford’s Poppy and the Pistols, and Mission’s The Nacaals, who replaced Surrey’s Kara Kata Afrobeat Group last minute due to a scheduling conflict.
nike free 2.0
The set-up made for excitement enough, with a surprise entry from the highest rated submission not originally included in the initial 18 band competition, as was pared down from the whopping 47 submissions CIVL received from bands across the Fraser Valley.
